Interleukin-2 (IL-2) mnemonic

Interleukin-2 (IL-2) mnemonic
Interleukin-2 (IL-2):
It is an interleukin secreted by Th cells that enables growth, maturation, and proliferation of CD4+ and CD8+ T cells. It is also known as T cell growth factor.
The immunosuppressive drugs, cyclosporin A and tacrolimus, inhibit IL-2 production by disrupting signaling through the T-cell receptor, whereas rapamycin (sirolimus) inhibits signaling through the IL-2 receptor. IL-2-driven clonal expansion of T cells is inhibited which is used in the prevention of transplant rejection (Explained in detail in Chapter 12).
Interesting fact: IL-2 has a lot of pharmacological potential. Trials have shown that IL-2 treatment in patients with AIDS induces an increase in the CD4 T-cell count with the increase being predominantly in naive T cells.
