Interleukins and their actions

Table 5.1: Interleukins and their actions

Interleukin
Secreted by
Action
IL-1
Macrophages
Pyrogen, macrophage activation.
IL-2
T cells
T cell proliferation.
IL-3
T cells, thymic epithelial and stromal cells
Bone marrow stimulation for hematopoiesis.
IL-4
Th2 cells
B-cell activation, class switching to IgG and lgE, induces differentiation into Th2 cells.
IL-5
Th2 cells
Class switching to IgA, eosinophil growth and differentiation.
IL-6
T cells, macrophages
Acute phase reactant, pyrogen, helps in T and B cell growth and differentiation.
IL-8
Macrophages
Neutrophil recruitment
IL-10
Th2 cells, Treg cells
Inhibits Th1 cells, inhibits cytokine release from macrophages.
IL-12
Macrophages
Activates NK cells, induces CD4 T cell differentiation into Th1 cells.
